Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
