Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
